They were replaced by steel rails in the 1870's in the United States; this was one of the first major steel mill contracts which took place and marked the beginning of the Industrial Revolution for U.S. steel mills.  If you don't have a porch we have an alternative for a small yard shelter built with our pagoda roof brackets at a fraction of the cost of a small gazebo.
